Financial planning can be a tricky business. Go after your goals confidently with the help of a Certified Financial Planner.
Even if you already have a good handle on your investments, a financial planner can help. They bring the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re on track to meet your financial goals.
A financial planner will look at your big picture financial circumstances as well as the finer points – from your monthly investments to long-term retirement planning. Financial planning can be complicated and it pays to have a professional in your corner, looking after your interests.
Choosing a financial planner is a personal decision, much like finding a doctor. Here’s a few things to keep in mind when you’re looking for a planner:
- Make sure they have a Certified Financial Planner® (CFP) designation. CFPs complete a comprehensive series of studies covering all aspects of financial planning, including ethics.
- Referrals are great, but remember that everyone’s financial goals are different. It may be helpful to put more weight in recommendations from people in a similar financial situation as yours. You can take this one step further and look for a planner whose situation is like yours. If you and your planner are both getting ready for retirement, for example, chances are they’ll be most engaged in financial issues that are relevant to you.
- Ask how they charge. Some planners charge by the hour, others earn commission on your investments. Some will provide you with a comprehensive written financial plan and meet with you every six months, others will be more hands off. Ask questions and make sure you know exactly what you’re getting and how you’re paying for it.
