Build a Better World Scholarship

Step into your post-secondary program with your right foot forward!

If you’re planning to attend your first year of university, college, vocational or trade school within the next year, the Build a Better World Scholarship is for you!

Each year, we award a $1,000 scholarship to 30 people starting their post-secondary education.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Our application deadline April 30, 2025.
  • To be eligible, you (or your parent/guardian) must be an Affinity Credit Union member. Not a member? It’s not too late – become a member today!
  • Before you begin your application process, review the How to Apply section below for details on everything you need to apply and make sure you have supporting documents.
  • Once you have everything you need, you can easily submit your application online!

How to apply

Follow the checklist below so that you'll have all the required supporting documents ready to attach electronically to your application.

What you’ll need to submit with your application:

Step 1: Reference letter

You’ll need a reference letter written by a teacher, group leader or community member, ready to attach electronically. Your reference can’t be a relative. The letter should answer the following questions:

  • Tell us about the applicant’s personal qualities.
  • Tell us about the applicant’s contribution to their community and/or school.
  • Why should this applicant receive this award?

Step 2: Short answer questions:

Prepare your answers for all questions that will appear on the application. Feel free to write your answers ahead of time so all you need to do is copy and paste them into the form. The questions will be:

  • What’s your career goal and why have you chosen it? (100 words or less)
  • Where have you applied for post-secondary (i.e. college, university, vocational, trade school, etc.) and have you’ve been accepted? (100 words or less)
  • As a credit union, we believe in making this a better world for all. In 250 words or less, tell us in your own words your personal views and ideas of what is needed to build a better world in our society. What are you doing to build a better world?

The application deadline is April 30, 2025.

Remember, you’ll need to attach your reference letter in one of the following formats: PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPG or PNG and ensure the document is no more than 1MB in size.

Once your application has been submitted, you'll receive a confirmation email. If you don’t receive an email, please don’t re-submit your application. Simply email us at buildabetterworld@affinitycu.ca and we’ll check on your application status.

To find out if you’ve been selected, keep your eyes on your inbox! Successful participants will be notified via email – you might need to check in your junk folder to make sure you don’t miss it!
